Contemporary newspapers are full of information. They are
designed to bring us the latest breaking information on most subjects
pertinent to society’s needs. However, most of these reports are
concerning bad news. But whether good or bad news it remains an item for
most city newspapers across our country today.
Men say they like to be informed on current events. Some
people actually like bad news, or so it seems. The fact is we need both
good news and bad news to be aware of current affairs.
Strictly speaking, the gospel is a term that represents
good news for sinners. “For everyone has sinned and come short of the
glory of God” [Rom. 3:23] this is bad news for men who think they are ok.
The bible informs man that we are all sinners and have transgressed the
law, 1John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for
sin is the transgression of the law.” The payment for sin is death, Romans
6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The bad news must come first. This is what repentance is,
realizing the facts concerning us. Believing the diagnosis that the bible
presents us. Coming to the understanding that within us there is no good
thing, Romans 7:18 “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth
no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that
which is good I find not.”
The cure for this biblical diagnosis is none other than the
scriptural one presented in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 “Christ died for our sins
according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose
again the third day according to the scriptures”. Also verse eight, “And
last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.”
We must come to know a resurrected Savior as Paul did. For
many today claim to believe the gospel, but know nothing of the
resurrected Lord. For many he is still on the cross. To not know Christ
Jesus the resurrected Lord of the universe in a personal way is to remain
dead in your sins.
Death is separation not only from the body [1st
death] but also eternal separation from God. This is called the “Second
death” referred to in Rev. 20:14 “And death and hell were cast into the
lake of fire.”
Most people know about the 1st death, but few
have heard or believe in the 2nd death or lake of fire.
The ultimate good news the bible has for a convicted sinner
is that “The Lord Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” 1
Timothy 1:15.
If
you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart
that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
This action of believing and confessing demonstrates that you have been
saved from sin and you will be saved from wrath. You have been
regenerated (born again) by the Holy Spirit. You are now a part of a
new creation – the Body of Christ. You are a brand new person
spiritually and your life will be transformed.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he
is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are
become new.”
The call still goes out today, Acts 16:31 “And they said,
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”.
